No, BUT it does have just ONE very important rule. That rule is this. The first player to put their hand up and call out ‘OnyaWallaby’ gets to answer each quiz question. If they get it RIGHT they get to move their Rock Wallaby icon 3 hops UP the game board.
The Quiz Master gives out the cards at the beginning of the game. He or she gives each player or team their matching Rock Wallaby ID card and one 'Bet on a Bettong' and one 'Punt on a Potaroo' card.
One can be used on the bottom half of the Game Board and the other on the top half. Once used they should be returned to the Quiz Master.
The Quiz Master answers how OnyaWallaby is played:
Welcome to OnyaWallaby - OnyaWallaby is a board game. It is also a travel Quiz and I am the Quiz Master for this Travel Quiz.
Your aim as players, is to get your rock wallaby represented by your plastic disc from the start to the safety of the rocks at the top of the hill.
Every point you score in the quiz allows you to hop up one space on the Wallaby trail.
Along the way there will be amber and red hazards. (Explain this).
To move up the board you must correctly answer questions from the Question book.
Most correct answers are worth 3 points
To answer a quiz question you must be the first player or team to put up your hands and call out 'OnyaWallaby'
The Quiz Master or the Oracle will judge who was first.
They will next hold up either a 'Stop' or 'Go' card to show if your answer was right or wrong.
If wrong, the next player or team with their hands up first can have a guess.
If you want to speed up your progress you can by opting to 'Bet on A Bettong, to 'Punt on a Potaroo or by Trading your 'Wallaby ID' Card. All 3 of these options are a gamble.
A player or a team must call out 'Bet on a Bettong' so that the game can be paused while the BOAB is happening. The BOAB gives you a free roll of the dice. If you are lucky and you roll a 4 a 5 or a 6 you can hop up the board that number of hops. This is in addition to your 3 points for your correct quiz answer.
However, if you are unlucky and roll a 1or a 2 you must go back that number of hops. If you roll 3 you stay put. BOAB is a gamble.
If you call out a 'Punt on a Potaroo' you also get a free roll of the dice. If you roll an even number of 2,4 or 6 you can move forward that number of hops in addition to your 3 points for your correct quiz answer. If however you roll an uneven number of 1,3 or 5 you must go back that number of hops. Once again it is a gamble! The rules for 'Trade' are in the original rules.
If some players or teams have not reached the top of the hill by the end of the Quiz the Supplementary 'Jumping Jack questions can be asked. Great Aussie Travel yarns can also be activated.
Good luck!
The Quiz Master can either make this choice OR give each team a throw of the dice. The team that rolls the highest score gets to choose the quiz and gets a 2 hop head start on the other teams.
The first team to put their hands up and call out 'OnyaWallaby' gets to have the first guess. If their answer is wrong the other teams can call out 'OnyaWallaby' and have the next go! Version one of the rules allowed a set time for each player or team to provide an answer.
In version one of the rules players or teams can 'Bet on a Bettong' or 'Punt on a Potaroo' many times. In version 2, player and teams get just one of each on the bottom half of the of the board. They also get one of each on the top half of the board! Players need to make strategic decision on when to use these options.
The Quiz master can decide to do up to 2 more quizzes or to alternatively they can do up to 3 'Jumping Jack' Questions each or tell some Aussie Travel Yarns.
